(Nov. 9, 2016)—On Wednesday, November 9, the nation woke up to a new reality. As we process the results of the recent election and its implications, at Cal Wellness we see both challenges ahead and reasons for hope. Our mission to improve the health and wellness of Californians remains vitally important, even as the political landscape is changing dramatically.
Cal Wellness is steadfast in our focus on addressing the needs of the most vulnerable in California. Where you live, your race, your income – these things should not determine your ability to be healthy and well. The work of our grantees and partners has led to unprecedented change in California, including effective and early implementation of the Affordable Care Act, an increase in the minimum wage, and implementation of key criminal justice reforms such as Proposition 47. We have much to be proud of as Californians – and our work is far from done.
The outcomes of the November 8 election do not change our commitment to achieving health equity for everyone in California, regardless of your political perspective or personal beliefs. We will continue to work towards “leveling the playing field” so that all Californians have access to good-paying jobs, safe neighborhoods and quality health care services. Government is an essential partner in this work, and we’re committed to working alongside our partners to hold leaders accountable for doing their part in advancing wellness for people in our state.
The public discourse was divisive and, at times, disturbing as the country inched toward Election Day. That day is now behind us. Whether you celebrated or wrestled with sadness when the results became clear, know this: Cal Wellness stands with every Californian and remains committed to health and wellness in every California community. Together we will face new challenges and new opportunities in our state and beyond.
