As a foundation committed to health care access for all, we are heartened by the Supreme Court decision today affirming the right to comprehensive reproductive health services, including abortion.
Today’s ruling in June Medical Services v. Russo strikes down a Louisiana law that required doctors at clinics that perform abortions to have admitting privileges at a nearby hospital. The ruling reinforces a 2016 decision in a similar case, which found that an admitting-privileges law in Texas was medically unnecessary and that it significantly limited access to abortion. The court found that a law placing an “undue burden” on a woman’s right to choose to have an abortion is a violation of the Constitution.
Throughout our history, Cal Wellness has been a vigorous advocate for women’s health. We fund a range of organizations providing direct services and engaging in policy advocacy to safeguard reproductive health. But federal actions have eroded access to critical health services, even here in California. For example, changes to Title X have resulted in Planned Parenthood withdrawing from the program, undercutting a critical part of our state’s medical care infrastructure. In many rural parts of California, Planned Parenthood clinics are the only community-based health care option.
We will continue to defend women’s right to access the full range of reproductive health care services, including access to abortion, because sexual and reproductive health have far-reaching implications for society. When women, transgender and non-binary people can access health care they need, they can create the lives they want, which includes raising children should they choose to have them, in sustainable and safe communities.
All people, regardless of income or circumstances, should have access to the information, services and health care providers they need to make decisions about if, how and when they plan their families. We are proud to partner with a strong network of organizations that help reinforce our state’s commitment to reproductive rights and access to health care. We encourage you to follow them and engage:
